Artemis Fowl
In the downtime before the appearance of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, after Red and I had picked through all the Diana Wynne Jones in the library, we picked up Artemis Fowl. Red had heard of it; it's the first book in a popular children's series. The author, Eoin Colfer, has apparently described it as his attempt to do "Die Hard with fairies". Alas, it's more like Die Hard II: a deeply cynical, deeply lazy effort that demonstrates a withering contempt for the intelligence of its readers. Artemis Fowl is a child genius, a master criminal. His father has been lost; his mother is mad; he, with his faithful butler, Butler (in a sign of bad things to come, Colfer tells us that the word "butler" derives from the name of Butler's family; the opposite explanation -- that Butler's family had been serving the Fowls since before surnames -- would have made it a clever touch rather than simply dumb), is bent on looting fairy gold. And therein lies a problem. I am happy to read a book about a Moriartyish or Luthorian twelve-year-old supervillain. I am less happy to read a book about said twelve-year-old doing battle with the Little Folk. A rule of thumb for genre literature is that you get one major suspension of belief per novel. Young genius Fowl plus highly technologically developed fairy society is two, possibly three. Given a well-plotted novel full of fascinating characters and shimmering prose, I might not kick, but Artemis Fowl struck me, as I said, as deeply lazy. A good chunk of the early book is devoted to Fowl's decoding of the mysterious book that all fairies must keep hidden from mortals. We are told that the language it's in resembles Egyptian. (Which Egyptian? That of "Tutankhamen's inner-chamber hieroglyphics." Uh-huh.) But the script as depicted in the book looks absolutely nothing like hieroglyphics, and it's not a language. It's a simple substitution cipher. Did Colfer assume that nobody would notice? Or did he think that kids would have a good enough time drawing up the chart of which symbol replaces which letter that he didn't need to come up with a better explanation? Similarly, the ending -- the ending towards which Fowl has been driving all the other characters, safe in his knowledge that he has one great trick up his sleeve which will turn the tables on his opponents -- feels dropped in out of nowhere (and from a great height, possibly from orbit). If Die Hard's climax had featured Bruce Willis calling in a SWAT team that hadn't appeared in the movie previously, I'd've resented that, too. J.K. Rowling has her problems as a writer, and I sometimes feel as if she's just going through the motions or hasn't bothered thinking through her plot, but I never feel as though she cheats. Good villains cheat; good books don't. I'll take a cartoonish Voldemort over a deux ex machine-wielding Fowl any day, thank you.
thanks for doing the legwork; i'd suspected that mr fowl would not be worth the effort and i'm glad to have that confirmed. surely you've read the "his dark materials" trilogy, yes? (i think we've discussed it, but in case your vast legions of readers have not, they should...)
My least favorite part -- though I gave up early, so there might have been plenty of many worse parts later on -- also related to the translation effort. After lots of discussion of how Artemis (and why is this male person (who spends lots of time reading up on mythology but never runs into this question for himself, as far as we know) named Artemis? who knows?) uses state-of-the-art translation software to crack the fairy language, the results don't look a damn thing like machine translation. They rhyme, horribly. They feature the workd "magic" spelled "magick." Ew ugh. Insulting and boring. Bah humbug.
Personally, I loved this book. I too have read the works of Dianna Wynne Jones and others. However, Artemis Fowl strikes me as being a lot closer to the Young Wizards series by Diane Duane then anything else I've read. There is the magical aspect of the world of the book, and the scientific.
The book only states that some of the language's charecters resemble hieroglyphics. Not all of them. The cipher struck me as simply something for fun. Nothing more.
The ending never seemed sudden or contrived to me. If you look elsewhere in the book, it mentions his mother disappearing from her room. But most people don't catch that until they have read it a second time. And even Fowl admits some things went wrong.
I agree about the explanation for Butler's name. Not a very researched explanation. Wish he had taken a little more time to look at the etymology of the name. That might have helped.
The name. Artemis himself explains it in the third book. Though it is the name of the greek goddess of archery and the moon, there have been males who have carried the name. Most females who bore the name had letters added onto the end as in the case of Artemisia (A sister of a Persian king).
Though it has it's weak points, I must disagree. I think Artemis Fowl and it's sequels are good books.
Young Wizards being the series including So You Want to Be a Wizard and Deep Wizardry, Rhiannon? Interesting -- I haven't read those in quite some time (since I was an actual kid, in fact), but I remember the characters seeming much more credibly than Artemis and Co. Part of it might simply be that it's pitched at a slightly younger audience than, say, His Dark Materials or the Harry Potter, but it just seemed so very... flat. And calculated. If I get a chance, I'll dip back into the Duane series this summer and let you know what I think.
(And my complaint with the ending wasn't about his mother; it was the method Artemis has devised to get around the fairy Unstoppable Death Ray. Could a reader have guessed that that would be Artemis' plan? In retrospect, was it obvious that it would work? I vote no on both counts. Demand more out of your evil geniuses! Their plans should be clockwork perfect, only to be foiled by the hero's one unexpected response.)
ok, just for REDFOX's info, in Greek mythology, Artemis was a female hunter goddess, correct. however, if a male hunter ever came along good enough, he'd been given that name(which you'd know if you'd read A.Fowl#3) and another thing, magick is a more proper(perhaps European) spelling than magic, so HA!!
You know what? I think all those glitches in the book, like the Butler name thing and the heiroglyphic comparison to fairy Gnomish, was put in there on purpose to make kids think and notice it. They do that in movies, you know. It's a psychological thing so you don't get too caught up and the grey area between your imagination and your knowledge of reality doesn't think its real.
OK...some of you guys are retarded....the name butler COMES from him being Artemis' butler and hey steve...i dont think the author wantsyou to know what is going to happen AT THE END of the book! of course he will give unexpected twists....and in the book it even said that not all the letters were in the egytian hieroglyphics...Artemis SAID that he needed to look at the closely related symbol and use that....and just like other people have written...the name Artemis is a greek goddess, but as explained in book 3....if a male comes around who is a great hunter, then he too can have the name Artemis in respect and to show his skill....it might not sound fitting until u read the third book...where , at the end, he tells jon spiro that he HUNTED him...and thats why hes named Artemis...there is a more specific explanation in the book, but i dont feel like typing it....i want u fruits to read it.
if a male comes around who is a great hunter, then he too can have the name Artemis in respect and to show his skill
I see no evidence of this in the mythology. Perhaps he would have better taken his Roman name, Diana?
i think that the artemis fowl series are GREAT books, and i'm not going to let SOMEONE else tell me what to think. i think that each book from the series are good, but i especially enjoyed the third book. Artemis is put under TREMENDOUS pressure, but none of you guys are able to notice it! stealing back the c cube away from one of the most SECURE vaults on earth AND knowing that his brain is gonna get wiped. if none of you guys like it, tough luck. you don't apprecheate good books when you see one.
well if you like a cartoon Voldemort than go have your Voldermort, i think that artemis fowl is a amazing piece of work. maybe it's because you are too dumb and retarted to understand the deep plot layers and hidden meanings plus the subtle hints. that's why you can appreciate it. since you are so stupid, i suggest you should start reading the ABCs picture books because they are made for people like you.
I think the Artemis Fowl books are great. esspecially book 3. My favorite part is when artemis tell's Jon Spiro he HUNTED HIM. And by the way thats why is name is artemis. this book is good for even the pickiest of readers.
this book is exellent
the dialouge (i like things that make me laugh)and plot twists (not knowing what he is going to do at the end)is what makes it so, not to mention the odd little quirks and coincidences
but please, feel free to express your opinions, no matter how uninformed they may be (obvously you have only read the first book)
there is a circle with a triangle and 3 circles on top of each other and a snail shaped sorta thing. wut is it?
okay, I only have one thing to say: Artemis is a lot smarter than me (and the auther is too for that matter) so there for, I gotta give him credit. Because I'm pretty smart *smirk* Anyway, I love the books because they're so funny and complicated.
The cipher in AF is a major mistake made by the publisher - it really should have symbols translate into words, letters and parts of letters instead of the symbol-letter system, which anyone can crack.
Have any of you mortals actually tried to decode or trabslate the lines across the bottom to see what they mean?
Now, that is a sick joke. "God" could have at least signed in as Zeus or something, you don't have to make fun of Him to get your kicks! And unlike most who signed in here, I LOVED those books, especially the third one. I can't wait until #4 comes out! I think Eoin Colfer said he's going to call it "Artemis Fowl:The Opal Deception". What might suck though is he also said Artemis might have a girlfriend. I don't want him to be just another smart guy who goes stupid because of some dumb girl(especially since she's obviously his age and therefore probably an idiot in comparison to him.)
I think that the AF books are great and yes i have deciphered the massage on the bottom of the book and personally i find the message quite interesting.and for you freaks who can`t realise a good book when you see one i think (as with many others)you shouldn`t have the right to read at all!
I can't break the encypted code in artemis fowl 3 there is a secret code encrypted in the cover does anyone know what it say's
On book one of Artemis Fowl there is a code or symbols on the bottom of the pages. Is there someplace on the internet to help one figure this out, or crack this code? Thanks
Well, o-not-so-omiscient-writer-of-reviews, Eoin didn't make up the symbols used for the code: some Eurpean professer-dude did. Ya boo to you!
I personally love the Artemis Fowl books, not only because the dialogue is hilarious, but also because they put forward the concept, slightly overused though it might be, that kids can be much, much smarter than adults- overused, but still the majority of adults believe that kids can be really smart, possibly because they weren't. Fairies may be overdone, but Eoin Colfer puts an interesting spin on them. He actually succeeds in making them far more interesting than the Harry Potter versions, which appear to cast them aside as rather dull. In short, Eoin Colfer took several slightly cliche and overused ideas, and made three bloody excellent books out of them. 'Nuff said.
ARTEMIS FOWL IS THE BEST BOOK IN THE WORLD!!!!!! WEATHER ITS UNDER GROUND WITH THE LEPrecons OR ON THE SURFACE WITH THE MUD MEN (SOMTHING U DIM MUD MEN WOULD NEVER COMPREHEND)HUMPH*
YOURS TRULY SARIA
I think this book rocks!!Well, maby the first book is the worst in the series but the other books are brillient compared to Harry Potter! The gnomish language doen't have to accurate, it's just a childrens book,I mean Harry Potter is written beter by a kin on the net than just JK Rowling.
I BET HALF YOU PEOPLE HERE HAVEN'T READ THE WHOLE SERIES, IF NOT THE FIRST BOOK! ANYWAY, YOU GUYS CAN'T TELL A GOOD BOOK IF IT HAD 'GOOD BOOK' PRINTED IN CAPITAL LETTERS ACROSS THE COVER!
LOVE mORiSOn
Oh my gosh if it will shut you up here is the link to the Eoin website. There you will find a link to the codes for the first two books. HAPPY NOW?!?!?!?!
Have you ever written a book? Im guessing no. because if you did then you would realize what it takes to produce a good piece of literature instead of trying to ridicule everyone elses attempts in a way to hide your jealousy. You definately could use a hobby.
I've read, Aretmis Fowl -All three of them- at least five times each. I've read the first one so many times I found a mistake, Colfer made. I've also figured out the gnomish code along the bottum of the pages in the first, Artemis Fowl book. The artemis fowl books are the only books I read, and are the best ever written. I only hope that, Colfer will write a forth to continue the excitement. The funnest books are the Artemis Fowl books, besides Artemis sounds like a total hottie. And holly is my favourite butt-kicker.
I really think Artemis Fowl Should be continued with a fourth book because These books are excellent. I love them. I am completly obsessed with these books, I am even think about making an Artemis Fowl Magazine.
Conor Ney
artemis Fowl is the greatest book ever written and so good that me and my mate have set about to read the encrypted messages
obviosly coffer made gnommish a code, not a new langede, if he did no one would be able to crack it, so what would be the point?
Also, before you critsis arthers, try writing youre own book, its harder then you think.
1- there is no 4th book, the treid ended the seris
2- a book is ether good or bad, there anre no worde to describe a tru work of art
3- Artiams fowl books anre good, but there not the ony good books in thins word, dont get so cought up on the ice cream you forget the pie.
4- the his dark materials triology rocks, so dous the givir, the lost years of merlan, nothing but the truth, and Enders Game
does anyone know the site for the code for the gnomish language? i figured out the code on the book but i lost the site. anyone noe the page for the code?
I luv artimis fowl!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And all you critics out there,WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE!!!!!!!!!
I have deciphered a bit of the book, and i'm wondering, what the heck is a phlegm pot? I jsut don't know....
Okay, basically a phlegm pot is exactly that. A pot in which a person spits phlegm into. By the way, phlegm's that gooey yellowy stuff that grows at the back of your throat sometimes. I know - very gross.
My opinion on the Fowl books - okay. They're the kind of books that you'd borrow off of a library, read it once, then shelve it back and won't think twice about. I'd give the series a 3 out of 5, i.e. average.
I am pondering how this conversation went from adult discussion of the balanced highs and lows of a book to tweenage bickering.
I think that on a whole the books were good, not exactly challenging material but it was written with the younger generation in mind and to that point it was effective.
I didnt like the code on the first or second book. The first, for the reason that it makes a mockery of the egyptian language and the second because it was just to close a match to our own when it was supposedly only remembered and understood by the centaurs (could be wrong on that bit. It's been a while since I have read the books).
I found the books enjoyable and the decoding a novel idea. There were only certain points (such as the third book with Artemis stating "I've hunted you") I found slightly degrading to the story as a whole but it was okay.
I'm not going to compare it to Harry Potter because I cannot understand the hype over those books; I found the writing to be rather poor.
on reading through this page i have seen many unjust and uninformed arguments, aswell as some immature name calling from people who cannot accept that everyone has a different opinion. I personally found the Artemis books page turning reads with a strong horoine for young readers to look up to.
HELLO! I LIKE ARTEMIS FOWL 3 BOOK.IS GOOD AND IS
FUNY.SORRY BUT I SPIIK FINISH AND I NO SPEEK ENGLIS VERRY LITTLE.
I've read all three books and found them interesting.
I'm 16, and found them easy to read, and I agree with one person's point that Artemis's solutions do seem to come from nowhere, but it's a cool surprise in my opinion, because that way it interests you to find out at the end what it actually is.
I have read works such as Lord of the Rings and am currently reading His Dark Materials, and I also love Harry Potter, but I hope anyone who reads this message and looks down on some of these choices of books doesn't look down on me and my opinions, they're just some of my favourite books, and Artemis Fowl is in there too.
I have also translated all the codes myself, which was good fun, and really are there just for extra fun to the book. Whether they are like the ancient heiroglyphics or not doesn't matter, IMO, because they are books written for a young audience that would find the thought of uncovering a secret message just for them is amazing.
In the first book there is a translation on about page 28 (but it might vary in books). Substituting one letter in Artemis's translation for a symbol is how it's done.
The Arctic Incident's code is simpler to crack, because the symbols *almost* look like the letters they represent. There is also a point in the book where the story follows Foaly and from what I can remember without the book in front of me, there is a poem about how the People had to go underground. On the book I had, this is the poem from the front cover of the book, so this can help you crack it too.
In The Eternity Code, on of the front pages where Colfer dedicates the book to out-laws and in-laws is the starting point to decipher the code.
Lol, hope that helps to anyone trying to crack the codes.
There's always comparisons to 'similar' genre books that have been written before, but IMO Artemis Fowl isn't a rip-off of the Harry Potter books, because fantasy wasn't created by JKR or Tolkein, it seems to have been around forever.
I have enjoyed really enjoyed reading and translating these books, they're fun books. Admittedly, I borrowed them from the library, but that doesn't mean I don't like them or don't think they're worth paying for, but my circumstances don't allow me to buy every book I want to read.
I do hope there is a fourth book, because I want to know what will happen now that Artemis has no memory of the People, and whether he'll get his memory back.
Once you've translated the Eternity Code you'll understand what I mean by this, but Artemis Fowl must find Mulch Diggums. ;)
Kudos to Eoin Colfer
I am sorry you feel that this book is bad. I happened to like it and I happen to like Harry Potter books as well. I know htere will be a fourth book to the Fowl books as I have read so on his websites. It will be out in the fall of 2004. This is my opion and I know we are all entitled to them. I accept yours, Please accept mine.
I, for one, liked the Artemis Fowl book a lot. I hear the second and third ones are very well written too, and I hope to snatch them from a friend sometime. Quite personally, I liked the intriguing combination of reality and fantasy, which are my two favorite aspects of a book. And, just to tell you if some of this sounds weird/confusing, I'm only thirteen.
I've only read the first one, and, admittedly, I only read it for a school project, but I overly enjoyed the book. I love the thought ut into the characters, and how Artemis sounds like a complete criminal, but it shows that sometimes he loses his cool and the little boy that he IS shows through. Though, one of my goals in the project was to get pages for the character's descriptions and had fun trying ^^
Also, another thing that I found interesting was how much research he put into the sites and scenery. Ho Chi Minh City was where my mother was born, and if I give her the first chapter, she can remember all the streets and alleyways he mentioned.
Also, the twists to old folk tales is one of the things I love to do also (being a bit of a writer myself). I love how he makes all the old fairy tales twists to match what is going on today, and makes the possibility of magic seem almost real.
Also, the coding, I found it very amusing. I've been meaning to decode the language and add it to my title page for the project ^^
Lastly, I admire how much the author knows about how much we are polluting our earth. One thing I've learned by writing is that the story reflects only as much as the writer knows. That's all I can talk about right now... I hope you didn't mind reading through all of this.
Also, all that bickering about the books and such was a bit childish (IMHO, of course) and hope you guys can accept that it's alright to like different things. I also loved His Dark Materials, The Giver, and a personal favourite of mine is The ousiders, by S.E. Hinton.
I'm having trouble with the code, but for everyone who didn't like the books, did you even read all of them? Probably not but if you did you have bad taste and I'm wondering why you even came to this site! Dought you had a reason! Peace!
Personally, I thinks its brilliant. ALOT better than Wynne-Jones and all that rubbish. Its alot more closer to reality and just the basic plot lines are fantastic. Please, dont leave that first review up the top there, for all those first-impression readers. People should be able to give it a try.
(And also; the 'magick' thing? Get over it. Ive read worse)
Oh, and by the way?
People can have different points of view.
Get used to it :D
I think that Aty is so sexy
i think the Artemis Fowl series are excellent and well written. Eoin Colfer said that he is writing a fourth book called Artemis Fowl: The Opal Deception and is also writing two other books called The Legend of Spud Murphy and some book called The Supernaturalist, but i hope that he comes out with the fourth book of the Artemis Fowl series very soon
I think artemis is the best book ever, you must be mad not to like it!!!!
Um,has any one read old magic? It's amazing. Diana wynne jones's books are sooooooo boring!
Will U lot stop critising artemis fowl? They're the best books ever full stop, no question about it. just accept that and get on with life rather than siting arguing, about how good a book is!
do any of you all know wut the code on the front cover of eternity code is and what it means?
dear eoin colfer
i love your artemis fowl books i head that you are writing a fouth artemis fowl book is this true?
Hey people who dont like Artemis Fowl. STAY out cause this is for people who like it not for people who dont. So keep you comments to your self and go post your feelings somewhere else. And if anybody needs help cracking the code just ask me :) i cracked them all. Took me a while but i did it. And you really want to know what The 3rd one says. REALLY!!!!!!!
I love the books. Maybe its just me. Maybe the people reading the books and dont like them are taking them too seriously. Not all books need to be analysed and picked over and closely scrutinised, looking for faults. Sit back, relax, and actually enjoy a book once and a while without logging onto its fan site and slagging it.
Can someone please help me to understand the code for book 3? im really stuck and have exhausted all my ideas.
Thanks,
jr. journalist
I luv the artemis fowl book and people are allowed to have their own opinion of things in case you people didnt know. by the way wot exactly does it say when you crack the codes? is there a website that gives you the messages or is someone kind enough to tell me the actual messages?
Hello!
Well, I personally liked the books very much, because the caracters are fascinating (please excuse the writng, I'm fourteen and live in Germany). I read the comments of the "Anti-Fowls", and respect their decicions. But I can't understand, why one should go around spiting (sometimes really uninformed) comments and therefor stamping out all the fun children could have with this book. For things musnt always be explaineble. At least not in a childrens book. By saying all these things, you could easily imagine the sort of person sitting on the other end of the net tipping this: Someone who does not read for pleasure, but to boast about with all sorts of critical issues trying to seem smart. Maybe these people should look past every little mistake wich can possibly be found, and try to reconize the message this book is trying to give us: People CAN make mistakes (even authers, thoug some persons do not agree with that), and that things can still turn out well. I just wonder, why they go around making such wonderfully "smart" comments about a childrens book, from wich they do not think is worth reading. Maybe they just do it, because people like these are clearly incapabel of understanding anything more difficult, or they are enerving now-it-alls, that have to comment everything, even if they havent read the book, or these poor souls have been critizised so often that they dont have the power to give credit to anything anymore, or they are people that stand around on fancy dinner-partys and talk about the reason of live, with such wonderfull chosing of words, that nobody can really understand the meaning (even if they really had an oppinion to this so "vulgär" theme),or, or , or,...I admit, that there can be some truth in what these morons are saying, but I can not see it,and dont think its all that important, for were not talking about Mc Beth or Hamlet. Ciao!
Uhm, just one more thing: Is it true that Colfer said Atremis is going to have a girlfriend?!?!?!
BYE
Revolutionary
wow. at the time being, all i can say is wow. Im not writing this piece to make waves, im writing it to do the opposite. To me, some of you are making perfect sense, yet oh so many others have gotten lost in petty arguments, minor flaws, and the fact that every one has an opinion. Those of you against the book, good for you. Those of you who love the book, good for you. Those of you trying with ceaseless effort to change the minds of others, one way or the other, shame. Take a step back from all the analyzing, take a step back from trying to defend this book. Realize that it is ONLY A BOOK. I absolutley refuse to reveal whether or not i liked the book. Im not here to pick a side, i wrote this to MAKE a side. Some of you may agree with me, and to those that don't, i won't try to change your mind. As you may have guessed, i am somewhat of a writer myself, and placing myself in Eoin Colfer's shoes and reading some of the comments here, I would feel flattered. The fact that a single book can bring about such controversy, such emotion is simply astonishing. I don't want you to take my side, I want you to make your own. I want you to create your OWN opinion. A variaty of opinions on this site would make it seem much more than what it currently is, an argument similar to those of 6 year olds.

holy freakin crap, some people got too much time on their hands, soon all your going to think about is this shity book, then your entire sex life is going to be you and your partner role playing artemis. its a god damn book read enjoy it, hate it dont start a cult behind it

..CODE DECRIPTION
the prophecies of ohm, phlegm pot cleaner to frond, elfen king. I am ohm, phlegm pot cleaner to the king, but i am much more than that, for i see the future written in the phlegm. for centuries we pixies have reas the phlegm, but i am the best there has evr ben. (evr, ben, se, are not spelling errors, there are rarely any silent e's in the gnommish language.) my visions are generally of little importance. i foretell outbreaks of troll pox or gas spasms among elderly dwarfs. but sometimes even a poor pot cleaner can se wonderous things. a vision came to me two moons ago when i was gazing dep into his majestys owl phlegm pot. i was heating the pot over a flame when the sign appeared. this vision was more vivid and detailed than any i had previously sen. becauseof its importace i decided to write it down for posterity and so i can say i told you so. i saw an age when the people have ben driven underground by the mud men. this is what the phlegm told me. in this time one shall come among us. fowl be name and foul by nature. a mud man unlike any other. he shall lharn (learn) our secrets and use them against us. i se him now as plain as day. his face is pale e has dark eyes and raven hair. yet it must be a mistake for he sems a mere yauth (youth). surely no mud boy could outwit the people. but now i se that the boy is notalone. he is aided by a formidable warrior, scarred from a thousand battles. this fowl shall hold the the people to ransom for their most precious possesion. gold. and in spite of all our MAGIC (not MAGICK) there is a chance that he will prevail. for he has discovered how to escape the timefield. unfortunately how the story ends i cannot say. but there was more to se. there is another story to come. someone will bring the people and mud men together. the worst of both races. this fairys goal is to grind all the creatures of the earth beneath his boot.and who is this traitor, it is not clear. but he shall start a war unlike anything the people have evr (ever) sen (seen). Those who were enemies shall be unifid (unified) against tim (time). And for the first tim (time) there will be mud men below ground. I have one clue to his identity, a riddle. Goblins shall rise and haven shall fall, a villainous elf is behind it all, to find the one who so disappoints, look ye to where the finger points. Instead of one face, this elf has two. Both speak false abd none speak true. While publicly he lends a helping hand, his true aim is to seize command. I know. Its not very plain is it, I dont understand either. But perhaps in the future all will become clear. Look for a powerhungry elf who has a finger pointed at him during our tale. And so, this is ohm's legacy. A warning that may save the world from total destruction. There's not much more to work with I know. The details are a bit sketchy. My advice to you is to consult the phlegm. it may be that you are sensitive. I have buried this prophecy with my phlegm pot. If you are not fortunate enough to work as a pot cleaner, then there is usually a supply of phlegm evry (every) tim (time) you have a cold. Herendeth (here ends) the first prophecies of ohm. but because of the importance of my visions I shall repet (repeat) the prophecies once more. If you have just begun to understand the text, then read on. If you have worked out hte entire message then congradulations. Now go and save the world.
End.
well, thats it, artemis fowl, book one, decoded. After the last sentance, it simply repeats the rest of the code over again. P.S. above in ohms riddle (italics) its not suppsed to be "abd" its supposed to be and.
well i have decoded the symbols. I've recorded them. I can read the language easily now. But all in all a good book
you know, peacemaker has a point, i actually quite liked the book, but it isnt something i woulld fight about. i thought it was great, but if you didnt, thats ok too. :)
dear eoin colfer i heard that you are writing a fifth artemis fowl book in june 2005.
can anyone give me a clue to how to find the message on the cover of the eternity code? thanx.

good to see you again
hee hee hee hahaha!!! artemis fowl is weird(wierd? this word is weird)

ok, i don't know what book you read, but it is obviously not the same as what i read. fair enough thats your opion and i respect that, but if you hadn't relised it is a kids book. the code the bottom, in my opion is just something for fun. I personly loved the books, and think he is a great writer. I also thin that it was a great plot and i loved all three. but i guess everyone has their own opion about books, and likes different authors and styles of writting, but i don't know if anyone else has tolod you this but if you can't say anything nice don't say anything at all.
Hey
I love the Artemis Fowl books. I thought they were absolutly fabulous and would recomend them to my friends(excuse me if my typing is a little bad,I am only 10!). I have a question acout the second book. Where is the code on it? As I was saying I love the books and I am also a hudge fan of Harry Potter and the Merlin series, but fankly I am a little dissapointed about what I have been hearing on here. I mean I am just a kid and I know some of you are probably adults, but you are acting like you are at least five years my jouiner, I mean come on people! This is sopposed to be so we can say how much we liked the Artemis Fowl series, not so that we can make a big deal out of it and make arguments! I can'wait until the Artemis Fowl movie comes out, or until the third Harry Potter movie comes out, so I probably have different oppionions than you, but every body is entilted to their own oppionions and that we should'nt fight just because we don't like each others oppions, so i think that this argument should be broke up while it still can. If anyone would like to make comments on what I just said, go right on ahead.
does anybody know the c cube language
if u dont know what im talking about then u probaly live in the US
JUST ANOTHER UP DATE AT THE MOMENT IM WRITING A BOOK ABOUT JIMI KITCHENER IM KEEPING THE PLOT QUIET AT THE MOMENET BUT ITS GOING TO BE ATREAT SO PASS IT ON PUT IT ON THE INTERNET IM CHOOSING PEOPLE TO COME AND SEE HIM IN LOWESTOFF AND GET HIS AUTOGRAGH PLUS YOU GET TO STAY IN A 4 STAR HOTLE![WOW]

the front cover of da 3rd book code says:
Think Fairy Think Again.
thats all i noe tho it took me like. 2 hrs to figure it out^-^
I agree. The book has too many paradoxs. The one thing I admire about the book's series the most is Artemis Fowl. (Still, he's a paradox, for the most part).
For the most part, the series is good for teachers and Eoin Colfer (who is also a teacher).
The whole Artemis Fowl series (rhetoricaly) is a teacher's dream to brainwash the smartest kid (well, a very smart one anyway) to be powerless (a.k.a money is bad).
Still I like Artemis Fowl (the character).
I even found a song that resembles the first book (a.k.a conflict between holy/the people and Artemis Fowl)
The lyrics and link to hear the song as followed:
*********Manipulate by Freezepop*********
you tell just half the truth
you're pulling strings and pushing buttons
wheels are turning in your head
i know that you are up to something
in your mind a plan is hatching
behind your innocent disguise
you know i'm onto you
so you won't look me in the eyes
you are a mastermind - manipulate
it's all by your design - manipulate
you think that i am blind - manipulate
but i'm not far behind
you know just what you want
you know just how to get it
you are far too devious
you're clever though, i must admit it
you've got that killer instinct
you do what must be done
you've got your own agenda
you're looking out for number one
you are a mastermind - manipulate
it's all by your design - manipulate
you think that i am blind - manipulate
but I'm not far behind
I'm not perfect, i've done it too
but not nearly as much as you
as much as you
you are a mastermind - manipulate
it's all by your design - manipulate
you think that i am blind - manipulate
but I'm not far behind

Sir, (you with the screen name of Eoin Colfer) I seriously doubt you are Eoin Colfer.
Hello. This is for Eoin. I was wondering, where were the movie auditions and when is it likely it should be coming out?
I really love all three of the A.F books, but I still think that the Harry potter books ARE THE BEST.
I think that the artemis fowl books are brill and anyone who thinks that HP is better probably doesn't have 2 brain cells to rub together. And my IQ is 155 so I should know. (No, im not lying, ive had it tested.)
Personally I loved all the Artemis Fowls and I have also read every single DIana Wynn Jones in existance and Diana DUane!! They are all awesome, and I totally agree it would suck if Artemis Fowl had a girlfriend, but knowing him, it would probably be in his abnormal state (good) and she would probably be a. rich b. have good connections or c. smart like genius. THis would totally suck, and I hope that he doesn't make it when Artemis FOwl is 18 because the whole beauty of it is that he is 13, plus I asked Eoin Colfer, he came to my bookstore, and he said that Artemis Fowl may not regain his memories!!! TO support this is the fact that in the first book, it says A fight between Artemis Fowl and the fairies stretched across several decades. I also think that Artemis Fowl is going to blush in this book. Dont ask why, can you imagine him blushing, (In his normal state: evil) it would totally crack me up.

God. Do you people REALLY think Eoin Colfer would post here and tell you about how he's going to cast some unknown fanboy for the movie? And do you think that an AUTHOR would type completely in capitals?
You want to know the hidden code in artemis fowl?
You want to know the secret language in artemis fowl? go to this website of eoin colfer.
http://homepage.eircom.net/~eoincolfer65/Codes.htm
It has the codes.just copy this URL in your address box and go on this website.
Did you crack the code at the bottom of the pages in artemis fowl books? It tells what will happen next in the story. artemis fowl{the first book in series}has different language than artemis fowl:arctic incident. you can find both codes at this address.
http://homepage.eircom.net/~eoincolfer65/Codes.htm
I'm an owner of the American edition of AF#3. Could anyone who owns the other version please scan the symbols at the bottom and the symbols on the dedication page? Send it to my e-mail if you will. I like cracking the codes on my own.
P.S.(at least on the American edition): The code on the front says, "The boy is in trouble" twice.
Oh, by the way, the Artemis Fowl books are great. I look forward to sequels.
(hopefully I get ones with codes. I have deciphered the first two books)
if you look on the internet you can find the cracked codes
On the matter of the fairy society:
Did it occur to anyone that a society like The People’s COULD NOT exist in FICTION? (It’s not logical, for a magical book) The fairies have this judicial system and 'government' that’s based off something like capitalism…wait. did anyone realize that it's like an American government and mostly like Capitalism? and wait… wasn’t our government based on the bible? And the bible on a monotheistic religion (Judaism, the US government took some of the ten commandments from the bible)...And the fairies have a polytheistic religion!!!
The People have things like ‘do not kill, do not commit adultery (I’m assuming this as the lower elements aren’t in total chaos), ’
Only a very religious society can exist on the verge of anarchy! And look at The People’s book! It’s by some fairy that cleaned phlegm pots!
But you say: It’s a magical book. Yes, it’s a magical book. But fantasy books can be logical too! Look at LOTR! The magic of the elves isn’t logic (obviously it is fantasy not sci-fi) but, the societies are based off REAL societies (a.k.a the hobbits are the British)…
In conclusion: Artemis Fowl is for stupid people, it’s a paradoxal book by a power hungry teacher! It is only a paradoxal action ‘flick’ (to say it in movie terms)…With a paradoxal lead character who if wasn’t a paradox could be a really interesting and cool character…
The cover of the first book translates to:
Carry me always
Carry me well
I am thy teacher
Of herb and spell.
There is also a tiny piece on the cover of book two translating in the word "Fowl"
The code running along the bottom of the first book gives a hint of what is to come in the second book. It is the prophocies of Ohm Phlegm Pot (Who thought of this name???). The code doesn't actually take up the entire book. It repeats itself about 2.5 times. If you want a translating key I suggest that you visit Eoin Colfer's website.
Personally this series is one of my favourite's and to those who criticize the book - read the whole series. The truth hurts.
Artimis Fowl is a really gr8 seris if you dont like it then obiously your mind is so incomplex that you probably have to tie your shoes by making a bunny go into its hole. I fell that you probably shouldnt even write about books because obiously you dont under stand them i like harry potter and Artimis. Now your gonna say that the lord of the rings had a stupid plot. maybe next time you should wait until a book gets turned into a movie before your BRAIN EXPLODES
PS movies are the little things that come on the screen at movie theaters
PSS movie theaters are the place you pay to see movies on a big screen
I'm a totall Artemis fan. I'm on everyday looking for news about the movie, but so far it's not . I did hear that Cameron Diaz might be in the cast though., as Holly.
Who think's Tom Felton should play Artemis? I do. He's perfect.
As for the release date of 7/22/04, that's entirly possible, though I think it'll be later in the summer. On tribute.ca it said only 'Summer 2004'.
The director is Lawrence Guterman, producers is Robert De Niro and Jane Rosenthal. Screenplay is done by John Stockwell.
The fimling of the movie, which was supposed to be done in Ireland, was delayed 'cause of exchange rates. Now there's news that the filming was CANCLED and there may not even BE a movie coming out!
I also heard that the movie was supposed to begin filming September or October LAST YEAR. All the imformation is so mixed up it's driving me crazy
By the way, the next book is called 'The Artemis Fowl Files' (on Amazon.ca, com, uk) or 'The Seventh Dwarf' (Eoin's personal site). None of these stupid Windmill things.
There you go. Happy? *grins*
Sry but the Artemis FOwl Files are not the 4th book, they are a collection of two short stories: The Seventh Dwarf (already published in England) and the story of how Holly got transfered to Recon. Sorry to disapoint you.
i luved the AF books they were great except i still don't get what the code is on the cover of AF # 3 arg can someone help??
_______
www.elro.tk games, fun, free e-mail and more!!
i still don't get what the code is on the cover of AF # 3 arg can someone help?? Is there going to be a 4th Af?? please answer by posting on the www.elro.tk guestbook
Yes there will be, a fourth Eoin COlfer came to my bookstore and he said there will be
I have read, probably, about a thousand chapter books in my time, and not one of them can even be compared to the Artemis Fowl series. It's
complexity , Humor, feeling, and love, is so perfect, I've read each more than 3 times. These books are absolutely, and completly, **sighes**, Great,Wow,Wonderful,Fantastic. They are also so increibly creative. Their whole idea, and shape, is so, so, beautiful, it keeps me reading for hours. God, I love those books.
Thank you all for your encouraging comments reguarding my book, Artemis Fowl
-Eoin Colfer
I just feel that Eoin Colfer lacks something. He just drops this bomb like "hey there's this character..." Like I'm supposed to know who Holly is immediately. Bottom line: He lacks introduction.
But the whole thing about Artemis being a twelve year old genius is genius.
They say the title of the fourth book is "The Opal Deception". I've heard too many rumors, but this one seems to be quite widespread around the Artemis Fowl community.
I can HARDLY wait for The Supernaturalist and the Artemis Fowl Files to come out. I just bought "The Wish List", which was excellent, and I love Mr. Colfer's writing style.
I wish they'd release a little more info about the movie...and auditions, if any...*points to e-mail* Let me know if you guys know anything, I'm just curious as to whether they've finished casting for the part of a Miss Juliet Butler...
*pokes itdoesntmatter* That's just part of his writing style. Of course, whenever authors write books, they'll never expect you to know you their characters are, unless you're some super-psychic person with supernatural fore-telling powers, which is highly unlikely. They have to find a subtle way to bring characters into a story, and make it seem like the story is actually happening, not like the characters are actually in a story.
That's his own way of introducing the characters. You can't be too formal about it. You wouldn't want something like: "This is Holly Short, gender: female, species: fairy, height: 3'4", weight: 57 lbs, marital status: single, toenail color: pink. She's the only female officer on the LEPrecon squad, under the supervision of Commander Julius Root, gender: male, species: fairy, height: 3'8", weight: 94 lbs, toenail color: black...."
I prefer Eoin's way. ^_^
Ok, "Eoin Colfer" (pheraps): can you translate the symbols of the third book? Cause you`re the author actually, you must know it...
I`m from Spain and I like very much this books.
I think Artemis need a girlfriend (Holly is very beautiful, yes, but she´s a elph-woman... WHO WILL LIVE FOR CENTURIES!!!) Juliet is very... very... well, Juliet is very Juliet.
A new character? A genious girl 13 or 14 years old? A miscelanous from Holly and Juliet? :-) I like it.
My favourite character is Potrillo (in Spanish, the centaur is called Potrillo, but in English, what is his name? Little Colt? I don´t know...)
Somebody know something about the movie?
I only know somethings about Tribeca, Miramax, De Niro, Gutterman and it's coming soon on April 2005... :-( well, I hope it´s worth it.
(What do you say about the filming, eh, mr. Colfer? ¬_¬ And the auditions?)
*agrees with Kyra* Arty does need a girlfriend. Like they say, "Behind every successful man is a woman." ^_^ And yeah, it shouldn't be Juliet or Holly. (Cross-species...ew.)
Also, Potrillo's name in English is Foaly, since a foal is a baby horse.
Personally for me, Artemis Fowl is one of the best series I've ever read. None of the books ever striked me as "dumb" or "mis-leading."
And also, DUH, of course Colfer had to devote some time to the decoding of the fairy language! What? Was he going to suddenly say: And Artemis decoded the language! In a simple sentence??? And I don't think that it took up a HUGE CHUNK of the book. It took up 2 pages. WOW! That's a stunning amount for a 277 page book. WHAT was he thinking??
The Butlers sur name isn't simply dumb. Some may find it confusing but why not just accept it as part of Colfer's creativity and obvious talent?? I found no need to dissect where the origin of Juliet and Domovoi's sur name came from, and find fault in every aspect of it.
J.K. Rowling takes the place of number 1 favorite author for me. But Eoin Colfer is right there next to her in the number 2 spot. All of his books have been interesting and a good page turner for me. I may be over reacting but I really find absolutely no reason to try and find mistakes (that aren't really mistakes) in each and every sentence of his fabulous books.
Well, maybe you're right, loyal fan, but I dont't like compare Artemis with Harry `cause they are diferent histories, diferent places, diferent characters... I can't choose any one of these books because I love the both ones.
(I need practise my English :-()
Can anyone give me details about the Artemis fowl Movie Auditions? I would love to be in the movie somehow.
Yes, I`m with Nixemus (hey, what kind of name is Nixemus Leirbas???), what happen about auditions?
(Why Eoin Colfer not comment nothing? ¬_¬)
By the way Kyra, Nixemus Leirbas (Nix for short) is my other name. My real name is Jason Dewey.
In an age when people are still swooning over works like Harry Potter, Artemis Fowl is a refreshing change from your average fantasy novel. I think it's ridiculous that a lot of people don't appreciate the series for what it is. It is not just fantasy; it is science fiction as well. And more importantly, it is SCIENCE. Eoin Colfer deserves enormous respect for weaving physics and chemistry into a novel that also features "fairies." Whereas Rowling is a notoriously creative author, she does not utilize the magic of the real world, such as science and technology; she mocks it, even. Perhaps this is part of her storyline, and I'm not saying that I'm not a devoted Harry Potter fan, because I impatiently await the release of the next novel in the series, just like every other avid reader in the world. Eoin Colfer deserves to be revered alongside such authors as Philip Pullman. Many people have imagination, and many have the ability to write, to create, to develop a fictional world that is worthwhile. But the thing you will not see often--authors weaving REAL magic into a FANTASY novel. As the art of fantasy literature develops, we move further and further away from the real magic--technology, science, and most importantly, the cunning of the human mind. I stand by Artemis Fowl for this reason. It's childish to criticize Colfer just because he dared to do what few other authors have attempted previously--to stray from the boundaries of classical fantasy literature.
I'm agree with Anonymous. In fact, I don't like so much the HP's series, but I will have got a good remember about these books: the first ones of fantasy than I was read... with ten years old!! Suddenly, I read Tolkien, Philip Pullman, Marianne Curley and Colfer :-)
Talking about the Rome's king, these questions is for the author: If I live in Spain, when I can buy the 4th book in Spanish? And what is the tittle? Oh, I forget it... and the 5th book's tittle?
Thanks!!
Oh, I forgot a last question: what is "ARTEMIS FOWL: THE SEVENTH DWARF"? I'd like to know if it's a continuation and when come to Spain.
(Yeah, I know it -- in my town there isn't too much information..)
Thanks again. ^.^
to answer your questions kyra the 4th book is called ARTEMIS FOWL: THE OPAL DECEPTION.
i'm artemis fowl crazy! even obsessed! i think Holly is tottally cool and foaly is really funny.
i also think artemis sounds like a total hottie!
i am dying to know when the 4th part and the movie come out in canada (i've read all 3)i'd also love to be casted in the movie so when are auditions for Holly.
you'r totally biggest fan...asskickn' a!
PS.all the artemis haters you got it wrong
i read all 3 a.f books and they were totally wicked! foaly rocks, and youre right anais west arty sounds like such a hottie!yeah, he does need a girlfriend(it so wouldn't work out with him and holly and juliet isn't his type.)i'd love to be casted in the a.f movie (as juliet) but that's,like sooooooo not gonna happen. especialy since i dont know when the auditions are(please, please, pleeeease tell me when they are!) see ya!,yours truly crazy canadian girl.
I like Artemis's attitude. Sounds like me... Wearing suits, clever comments, extremely ittelligent, etc....
Ha ha ha.
OK, in www.artemisfowl.co.uk the 4th book's tittle is A.F.: THE OPAL INCIDENT (I hear it after...) and the 7th Dwarf is a special book for the World Book's Day (someone know if this one will come to Spain?)
Hey, baBy baT, we'are look at a girlfriend for Artemis, are you interested? ;-)
Artemis is so, ugh, criminal, but he's cool, reminds me of Alex Rider, only genius not spy
i decoded the code at the bottom but i want to know what the symbol for Q is. anyway it's what the pixie says and how she knew artemis was comeing. it's all about the vision and how clear it was, more detailed than her others.
i think it makes a good laguage to share with friends and see if they can figure it out and write it!!!!!!!
OK, first question, where the hell are you guys?!? I'm over here in USA and as i read, i think i counted about 20 people that soud like they have an english accent, 1 Finnish person, and three or four people who sound like they are from austrailia.
Second of all, what is this about a language that only the centaurs remember? Musta gotten cut out in the American edition.
And last but not least, it is a BOOK. ya, it was great and all, but find another one, read it, obsess over it, and move on!
P.S.- I was reading the Artemis Fowl(UK) website, and it clearly stated that the next book would be called The Opal Incident. I checked tonight and that info is no longer posted. But that should clear up all that misconception.
delete the spam comment. =P
I personally think the AF series combines some of the best and the worst I've ever seen in fiction. His knowledge of science, for one, is extremely ridiculous. There are tons of science-related flaws, like the inexistence of "ion trails", inconsistencies about healing (is it energy? - then its speed would be constant, speed of light!), the complete impracticality of "omni-sensors" and "magnetic screws", the biological issues with dwarves (minerals can't be used to produce energy. refer the whole concept of free energy and entropy) and a mistake about cryotech (I think it's a special sugar, triose, not glucose). And the most galling one is of course shielding, which almost completely drives the plots. You can't "vibrate out of the visible spectrum"; to stop reflecting light, you'd stop interacting electromagnetically with the rest of the universe, which means you'd collapse spectacularly into a neutron soup (proton + electron: no electro-repulsion, remember?) and slam into the nearest gravitational mass i.e. the center of the earth. not a pretty fate for Holly. the irksome thing about it is that these aren't peripheral errors - the plot collapses when you refuse to suspend your science.
that is the worst. the best is - you have to admit, this is very novel territory. for someone who's going where few have gone before I think he does a darned interesting job of it. it's far more innovative and fresh than, say, the idea of a wizard throwing fireballs about and turning things weird. the whole thing about fairy civilization, a society (very, very shallowly sketched) that remains undiscovered and hidden - a civ that is hiding. now that's nice. and it's not impossible - the location (subterranean?) might be dodgy, but I can certainly imagine an intelligent (now that's the hard one) dwelling at, say, the ocean bottom. unexplored territory. it's like Star Trek - of course "the aliens all look like swelled-up people, and they all speak English!", but the incredulous-ness is outweighed by the enormous potential that the scenario opens. i feel the same applies to artemis fowl.
his writing style...erm. it's punchy and catchy. won't win any Lit Nobels soon =P but it suffices. There are gems in there that I personally would feel proud to have written. and of course the ending of AF1 did seem incredibly deux ex machina but come to think of it, that's the only thing that would have worked. you might as well criticise AF3's climax for being so "orchestrated" - except it WAS orchetrated, by Artemis himself. I don't think it "lazy" - to me, this is a classy plot. besides, the books are SHORT! how can you compare a long plot that has been planned over 7 sequels, to what seems more like a series of one-shots?
I still think that Colfer has opened a wonderful world, even if it doesn't make sense. =P excuse me for saying that I personally think AF beats HP, any day. You may disagree, but at least understand why I can say that.
Excuse-moi Jessie, but if your checking all the websites for news of Artemis Fowl, than thats pretty hypocritical, no offense.
- 'In the USA, Sick, and Extremely Bored'
AF Rocks! So does Ender's Game. And the Who! (they're a band)
Yankees S***! Righteous
I think this book is pretty tight. I'm kind of like artemis like his attitude but I'm not nearly as smart as him. In the first book, in Ho Chi Minh City, that guy was checking for weaponry and he was lieing to artemis that he was the waiter. However, Artemis told him that he wasn't the waiter because of his rings, etc. etc. I usually do that to people (it's one of the reasons why I lost 1 time in the card game BS or BullSh*t and won like a million times) because I know when they are lieing or not. I once did that to a teacher and I got detention for 3 days but it worth it. He got him moded so bad. :) Anyways, I think Artemis Fowl books are just great and I can't wait for the 4th and the 5th book. ;-)
Can you please help me? I need a summery on chapter 5-7 in artemis fowl or can any point me to a place where I can find one?
That's my favorite part in the book William. I like the Artemis books because of that, how he is.
Hey Josh, Its not ohm phlem pot. It actually is Ohm, it then continues to state that his is a phlem pot cleaner to his majesty
Artemis Fowl rox!!! It'll be cool to find out what happens in the 4th book!!!
come and see jimi kitchener's new website it's about alien it has coll info.
jimi kitchener is obviously acting as eoin colfer, considering it's december there will be no movie,
why would a fifth book be out in 2005 when a fourth book has not been produced yet?
if anyone doubts that reasoning complain at someone_who_cares@terrace.qld.edu.au
actually there is a 5th book coming out soon (probably 2005). Eoin Colfer already wrote number 4 and he is trying to publish it as soon as possible. He's probably working on the fifth book right now. By the ways, I have decoded number 1 and 3 at the bottom of the book. I got the translations for number 2 but I'm do lazy to translate it lol.
P.S. Rape dude, don't say shit because u sound like a young guy who's in to sexuality and want to show off ur sexual power to us. :-0~~~~
P.S.S. hey khazar, wouldn't it be cool if they made a clone artemis except the clone one was on the opposite side of the real artemis? Lol, genius against genius.
soo much to say...
first off, i love the AF books. they are not in any way written badly. I do have issues with the third one though, the plot seemed a little forced, but it was still good as books go.
I can't wait for the fourth novel (not including the AF Files). I don't know if anyone's mentioned this, but the current release date is May 3, 2005.
I think that anyone who has to go onling to translate the code makes the human race look as dumb as the faries think we are. There are two side-by-side pages in AF1 that have (on one side) the gnommish symbols, and on the other the direct translation-compare the symbol to the corresponding letter, ppl! i "broke" the code when i was nine!
a comment on foaly's translation above: thank you for doing that! i have never had the attention span to translate everything. For words like see and been, they do in fact have both e's. If you look carefully, the zigzag representing the e is thicker and darker than normal. this is not a printing error, it instead denotes a double e.
P.s. when's the movie sposed to be released?
come and see jimi kitcheners website at www.maxpages.com/aliensareus jimi is going to be in the artemis fowl movie and he is going to bei in spy kids 4
ive decoded the whole book all it says is pretty much a gigantic sumary of what the artemis fowl trilogy is about.
I think that it is a bunch of baloni that makes no sence whatsoever
I love the Artemis Fowl books and I really have to say sorry to all the critics out there but readers of the Artemis Fowl series are NOT LOSERS. Eoin Colfer has a great imagination. I think Artemis Fowl is the greatest invention EVER. I look forward to the 4th book and the movie. Please, please stop criticising Artemis Fowl and Eoin Colfer, go open that book and really put your soul into reading it. When I came here I felt like fuming and I would like to stand up and applause for all those who say Artemis Fowl is a great series. You are definitely RIGHT. Very right. Artemis Fowl is a brilliant series and those who think that Eoin Colfer is a bad writer and Artemis Fowl is the worst creation ever, I am sorry but I am guessing you have not read the book and just spared it one glance and thought it was some lame book. I admit I always thought Artemis Fowl was boring but my sister bought the Eternity Code, and I read that. The first page caught my interest so fast I grabbed the first book and read it. Eoin Colfer is the greatest writer ever and that is all I am going to say. Though i've said so much and I feel like punching this screen just looking at the names of all you critics. Go read Artemis Fowl. Really. I promise it's not as bad as you think it is. It's much better.
I think the Artemis Fowl books are quite interesting.I like to read them.
Hi people!!!!
Great books, but what's the f***ing fuss? Yes, they rock but chill people! Oh and if 'JIMI KITCHENER' still looks at this site, please post something - you sound fit
Actually, I take that back. Just seen the website. Not saying there's anything wrong with aliens but you sound like a bored, young or mentally retarded child. The Supernaturalists is a great book! Read it.
lol im rereading the artemis fowl books
they're my 2nd fav series
ever...
and that gnomish alphabet thing
i just looked at the page in the artemis fowl files
and i knew them all
in the fourth book, opal koboi escapes from a 24 hour video watch by clonig herself, and she sets out to get revenge on everyone one that put her there, while trying to take over the world. on the cover it says "when you need a criminal genious to save you, you really are in trouble"
it start off when artemis is about to steal a priceless impressionist painting in berlin.
who thinks the rock should play butler in the artemis fowl movie?
the cover is green and sparkly and has a pic of dna strands on it, the book is 300 and somting pages long.
whos playing arty in the movie?
I want to play Artemis Fowl. Does anyone know of auditions?
He(The Rock)has got a ponytail and is constantly showing off and makes too much of a show, whereas Butler is bald and understated.Personally Ithink Vin Diesel of xXx and The Fast And The Furious fame is near-perfect for the part.
vin diesel isn't buff enough to be butler.
nobody's hot enough to be artemis
cept maybe tom felton
it's my guess they've already started shooting the movie, so i dont think anyone'sgot i hope of being anything. sorry
How do you know so much about the fourth book Maddy? I think a film would ruin the Artemis Fowl books cos they probably wouldn't get it accurate and nobody would be able to fill the position of the main characters... except maybe Colfer's relation who is apparently perfect for the part of Artemis Fowl the Second. They'd also make it all commercial as well, possibly putting in un-connected romance to make it sell.
i personally think the artemis fowl books are great. the problem is that you people are arguing over the most stupid thing. i love books but everyone is different and so are books. i hate the terry pratchet novels but thats just me, my mum loves them.
elysium: i know so much about the fourth book because i know where to look to get info (reliable info that is). in fact, im fairly shocked all of you are so clueless, dont you ever use the internet for purposes other than this site? and to those no brainer who thought it was gonna be called the opal incident, you need to get out of isolation.
the book will be released in may or july.
i aggree about the movie, its going to totally wreck the book. you seem to know more about it then i do, whats this about someone being good for the role of artemis?
i love the artimis fowl books. i mean like artemis is a cool kid and is a boss of butler and so ya.
hey dudes. artemis is a hottie!
I love this book
the cod at the bottom of the AF 2 book says: congradulations human. if you have cracked this code you are more intelligent then most of you species. this is a message from the fairy people. we are seeking out our allies amoung the mud men. though most humans are dullwited creatures there are exceptions. you for example. the reason for you intelligence is that you have fairy ancestors. do you feel different from those around you? are your ears a bit pointier then most? is you tongue long enough to touch your nose? do you dream of flying? have you ever thought that you do not belong amoung mud men? that is because you have fairy blood in your veins. so young mud fairy, i have a mission for you. as one of the people it is your duty to protect the earth from those who would destroy it. you must become one of a new race of mud men who love this planet as much as the fairy folk. there is one simple rule. use only what you need and use it wisley. do this and the earth will survive. go now and begin your quest. i shall repeat this message for those whose fairy intelligence is buried a bit deeper then yours.
then it just repeats itself. i cant beleive so many of you were asking about it! i cracked it in two seconds, and translated it in five (sigh)
I enjoy reading through this informal place. I will surely visit you again to see if anything new appears on it.
Good luck for the future.
I agree Maddy the codes are s***t easy
i love this site! although id like to talk to the same people sometimes (it shows that when people ask me a question, they come back to check the answer) so peoples PLEASE come back
I don't know if anyone's noticed, but I believe there's a big error in the 3rd Fowl book. Jon Spiro mentions that the guards in his vault are changed regularly. But how does that happen, if Spiro is the only person who can open the vault? Does he open the vault every time guards need to be changed? Personally I think the whole 'live security' was a bit much, automated security would've been enough. If anyone has an answer, speak up.
But, mistakes and all, I LOVED the books, and anyone who doesn't, need to get their heads examined.
This is to Maddy. I see I'm not the only one who has researched the 4th book. By the way, the green cover with the pics of the DNA strands is the Puffin Books cover. The cover by Miramax publishers is greatly different. It is brown and gold, and looks like a tunnel heading into a bright light. I didn't look too closely, though, and I may have missed details. If you like, I can get back with more details.
And thanks for cracking the code.
iv seen that cover. i thought it was just a hardback special edition. i didn't even know mirrormax published books.
i really need to knowa way to crack the code on the 3rd book, because, after careful examination, iv realised it is a code. if you look closley you'll notice the thin lines which represent the ends of sentences.
i think once your in the spiro vault, it would be easy to get out, thus making it possible to switch security (granted no-one accidentally closes the door while no-ones in the vault). but it doesn't say in the 3rd book that spiro and co. were wearing oxigen masks when they were waiting for artemis, or even artemis was wearing an oxygen mask, once in the vault, they all would have suffocated.
still love the books
I think only the Puffin version is available in UK, 'cos amazon.co.uk sells Puffin, while amazon.com sells the Miramax version. But both Miramax and Puffin are available in a number of countries.
Afraid I can't help you with the codes, I'm very busy at the moment, and I'm useless at puzzles.
actually, amazon.com sells the sparkly green books too. and i dont see why all the other books that come out in australia are sparkly, yet this one isn't, it wouldn't make sense.
if anyone has any info on the 3rd code, please contact me imediatly!
this is to elysium. you didnt happen to grt your name from "daughters of elysium" (thats a book by the way)
Would Barry kindly elaborate on what he is trying to say?
No Maddy, I first saw it on the Gladiator soundtrack. I knew it meant 'resting place of the blessed dead' (greek myth) and I thought it was kinda cool... is the book good?
iv never read the book. i just saw it in a second hand book store and the name struck me.
who heres from the UK?
Me!!!! Where are you from Maddy?
These Artemis Fowl books are so cool!!!!!!!! Though I'm still figuring out what the symbols at the bottom represent.
Oh yeah, I forgot. This is for all the people wondering what the fourth Artemis Fowl book is. Well it is The Supernaturalist. Thank you. Thank you. Your all welcome.
elysium: im from australia.
ps. pimps an idiot
pps. i recently saw jimi kitchners new website. THE TRUTH IS OUT THERE! (mental giggle)
'Pimp' you fool. The Supernaturalists is a good book though...
whens the sequal to the supernaturalist gonna be out.
what part of the uk r u from
I wasn't aware there's a sequal coming out, therefore I have no information as to dates of it's release.
I'm from Ipswich, Suffolk, East Anglia etc etc
uhhhh.. elysuim. ur the foo
thats the wackiest town, country or watever name iv ever heard. of course there'll be a sequal to the supernaturalists, and its going to be based in antarctica. didn't you read the end of the book. is it just me, or does eoin have a thing with the arctic circle. guess wat! its pronounced "o-in"
and wat is pimp implying to elysium. ur the foo?
Hmm. Well, you obviouslly have all the answers. Why is it wacky?
And yes, exactly what do you mean by "ur the foo" ?
*obviously
just never heard of it. wat was that last thing you posted supposed to mean. if it was sarcasm, i generally cant tell the difference from normal speech, even when people are talking to me face on, let alone when they post it on the internet.
who agrees "the rock" would make a better butler then vin deisal in the artemis fowl movie.
who also agrees cameron diaz will definatly not make a good holly and hilary duff would make an excelent juliet.
im not in any way commending hilarys acting skills, i just think she has the right look.
I don't think Rock would make a good silent bodyguard. Also, I think he's a few inches too short to be Butler.
elysium (fool). I said ur the fool because you were the first on to call me a fool, fool.
But you are a fool, because you thought "The Supernaturalists" was the 4th "Artemis Fowl" book, so technically, she wasn't wrong. And of course, if she wasn't wrong, and you're not right, it means she was right, and being right generally implies a higher level of intellect, which makes u calling her a fool even more incorrect. And the fact that you called her a fool twice, makes you seem even more unintelligent then in most cases.
Moron
And technically, elysium was not the first to call you a fool, as she was the only one to call you a fool. If you were to say she was the first to call you a fool, as you did, it's simply implying you are to expect, or have experienced, more insults of that exact wording after the event of her calling you a fool eg. one only says "he was the first to reach the south pole", when one expects other to do so afterwards. But if you were to say "he was the only one to insult King Henry (or some other famous name)", it implies that he was, or would be, the only one to do so. Although, I'm now beggining to realise why you chose that specific wording.
Could somebody please tell me the way to decript the code on the third book, or tell me of a website that would.
Thank you maddy. It's kinda hard to explain how to decode the third one... I can tell you that 'e' has the largest number of bars, twelve to be exact. The first sentence is, 'a message from Artemis Fowl'. There, hope that helps.
thanx! it will!
is anyone gonna post anything on this site, or do i have to have a conversation with myself?
A conversation with yourself inside a forum will be somewhat unusual. But I can understand your feelings. No one (me included) seems to have anything new to add. But this will undoubtedly change when the 4th Fowl book comes out. Since then, let us find our "quiet place"(quoting Madame Ko).
s'pose so
Why do so many people criticize these books? I bet that there are about 100 people that have written on this site that the hate the Artemis Fowl books. They just don't want to admit that the actually like the series.
damn stait!
soooo u nerds get emotional when people say artemis suks ay mwahhahahhahaha artemis would ne ashamed that ur his fans u NERDS u think ur a hardcore artemis fan but ur not and pimp u go high wen ur in a toilet so u better shutup
hehehehehee thats rite mwahhahahahahha mwhahahhahahahhahah thats rite u cry nerds
that sounds like something a nerd would say, freak!
AT LEAST I HAVE A LIFE! IF YOU'VE GOT NOTHING BETTER TO DO THEN TAUNT PEOPLE ON WEBSITES, GO PICK ON JIMI KITCHENER, NOT US!!!
FREEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAK!
book #4 is the Opal Deception. It says so in the back of the AR files, in gnommish.
book #4 is the Opal Deception. It says so in the back of the AF files, in gnommish.
duh! the opal deception starts in berlin, where artemis is preparing to steal a famous impressionist painting. little does he know, his former enamy, opal koboi, has escaped from a 24 hour prison watch by cloning herself, and has saught to get revenge on everyone who put her there, including artemis, whilst trying to take over the world.
meanwhile, in the lower elements, holly has been convicted of a heinous crime, but escapes from jail to try to rescue artemis. but before she manages, opal intercepts them both, and makes artemis come face to face with the man that would destroy the fairy people.
see amazon books.
when is it comin out?
of all the things i've checked, that, oddly enough, was not one of them. you look up something for once!
artimis fowl 4 is coming out in may dont no exactly wat day but near the beggining
i just found out it comes out on the 5th may 05
by the way i looked 4 an egyptian translator and gnommish looks nothing like it, apart from the E prehaps, and that its based on symbols...

kate
how did you (someone) crack the code?
the Artemis Fowl series are my favorite books of all time and I do believe that people have the right to their own opinion but to scrutinize the book so much that you try to prove every little detail on the book wrong is just pitiful and highly 'affected'. You forget that the book is targeted to the younger audience and isn't exactly something that acclaims itself as completely accurate. and it has already been stated before that the code that apears on the book isn't really the code the author had in mind.
Artemis Fowl isn't a perfect book but it is a well done story that captures the modern imagination in such a way that few other books of the same genre has failed to do so. It is also a fresh new spin on the fantasy genre that dares to be different and a bit more witty and interesting unlike any of its more hyped coleagues(i'm talking to you Potter). Sure their facts maybe mixed up but it IS a fantasy and any tweaking of reality is welcome.
does anyone here watch Family Guy? if so, don't you see a little bit of Arty in Stewie?
Will there be a book 5? If so i hope it's the last, I don't want it to be too dragged on like the Potter books (Phoenix was horrendous) since it's not as well crafted as the Snicket series (which i think is the best series ever written).
I heard they were going to primary schools around Ireland looking for someone to play the part of Artemis. Does anyone know how to get a school included even if it is a small school or how to get an audition.
Hi my name is conor ryan and i was wondering, i'm 14 years old and i live in limerick, are there auditions for boys my age and where? and are ye going around to secondry schools for parts in the movie? i heard about all of this on the late late show on the 4th of march. thanks
i, personally, think the order of the phoenix was fantastic.
I love your books and have only just found this site, i think that artemis fowl realy captures the idea of "boy genius" perfectly, anyway, i'd love to read the 4th book. i hated the harry potter movies, but loved the books. and i do watch family guy, oooh its coming on now, at 11:30! bye.
i definatly see a lot of the boy from the family guy in artemis.
I personally consider the Artemis Fowl series, along with Harry Potter, His Dark Materials and, of course, the Lord Of The Rings, one of the best series ever written. I can't wait until The Opal Deception comes out, but I know I will suffer a lot, cause down here in Mexico it will be the hardest book ever to get!!! Anyone has an idea on how to get it?
Maddy, if you want I can post the answer to the third code later...
yes! please please please post the code of the third letter!!! i thought i could figure it out, but i was wrong. post it asap!
how did u figure it out?
haha im crazy!!!!
you are crazy!
This is a VERY IMPORTANT announcemnt for all Artemis fans. You can now READ the first chapter of the "Opal Deception" at www.eoincolfer.com. Just go to eoincolfer.com, go to the "Site Map", and click on the link marked "Opal Deception Ch.1". It will take you to the totally awesome first chapter of Opal Deception. If you've already read it, good for you. If you haven't, GET GOING.
hi every one i heard that the fourth artemis fowl is coming out this year i also heard there is a fifth.
yeah there is and there is a book
I hope the film is not sh- ahem, bad. T'would be a shame to ruin such a good book.
Can I just ask whether anybody here lives in England, especially in East Anglia?
Not saying that I do of course...
could somebody please write the code for me!
OK. The code.
are idiots allowed on this site?
well, there appears to be one already.
OK, I'm taking a survey. How many people in this forum has read the first chapter of Opal Deception? And if you have, your comments on same?
come and see jimi kitcheners website he has upgraded it. its better than ever!.www.maxpages.com/aliensareus
i find that eoin colfer is paying little attention to the ecology like he used to .In the first 2 books there were references to how the mudpeople were ruining the ecosystem by unbridled pollution.but the 3rd book is just a mind boggling maze of plots ,smart talk and bravado packed in stuttering ,truncated sentences .
but i think AF is better than HP .jkr is simply squeezing the profits from her creation ,making the books fatter .who cares sbout harry's hopeless romances ,really ?and that bit about the brains attacking ??maybe she thought we needed some mystery about that -theres no other word for it-idiotic scene with chang .jkr actually ends up with a horibly convoluted book .she should take a page out of af and keep the books short and sweet .
i think eoin colfers already told us enough about the environment, it's time to get on with the story. the first chapter was fantastic! the last sentence kept me thinking.
yes ,the first chapter is definitely the best among the 4 books .It compels u to read on.
I think they're all great! The fourth one looks interesting.
Also, loads of people are having... difficulty decoding the third one. If you want to know what it says, read on. If not... don't.

Think Fairy. Think again.

A message from Artemis Fowl. Encrypted.
My dear newfound ally if you have deciphered this code then you are of sufficient intelligence to aid me in my mission. You may have heard of the Fowl family and imagine this mission to be illegal or even dangerous. I promise you this is now the case all I ask that you help me keep my memories where they belong. In my head. There are certain forces at computer disk to a reprobate of Mulch Diggums. The disk contains all my knowledge of the fairy folk. Of course the mind wipe will cause me to forget all about the dwarf and the disk. Diggums should bring the disk to me but common criminals are not to be trusted. I ask you to get a message to me. The message is simple. Six words only. Artemis Fowl must find Mulch Diggums. Wherever you see one of the faithful clutching this book repeat those words. The message will spread like a virus across the world eventually reaching my ears. I will act upon it putting all my resources into locating the mysterious mister Diggums. Once I find him the disk will reactivate all my memories and the knowledge will be mine again. Do this for me and when I rule the world then you will be rewarded. Remember Artemis Fowl must find Mulch Diggums.
Your new friend Artemis Fowl the Second.
thank you
Please, can anyone help my students crack the code of the first book. I am a librarian and my students are looking for the code on the Artemis Fowl website but we haven't been able to find it. Has it been removed? Can anyone help????!!!!
Please help my elementary school students crack the code for the first book. Has the help in cracking the code disappeared from the website? We have looked and can't find it on there?
What the Hell is the climax of this book???????
wow! finally! people with my own level of intelligence!
wow! finally, people with my own level of intelligence!
The third book's secret message makes for more interesting reading than in the first 2 books
the prophecies of ohm, phlegm pot cleaner to frond, elfen king. Now go and save the world.
there are no errors in the writing. i just completed it and there were no errors
the decoding has no errors in it i did it and there were no errors
can you please tell me the writing on books 1, 2 and 3 and the covers in the writing its written in and in english?
please can you tell me the writing in the language on all the books and the front covers in the same language as the book and in english
Hi, I couldn't help but read.
Damn you people hate each other.
I can't believe this! OK, I do see some flaws in the book, but having an arguement about things like:
Butler's Name (Which I thought was a creative way to tell you how obediant the butlers are)
Magic/Magick (Magick is the correct old english spelling)
Artemis (which means something like wise hunter, a perfect name for artemis)
Is just a complete waste of time.
I do agree that on occasion artemis's ideas do come out of nowhere, but beyond that, I see few flaws. I loved the way he radicly redesigned the thinking of Fairy Folklore for this book! I'm glad
